Red Balloon

Red Balloon is a highly popular online Events and Gifts Company founded by CEO Naomi Simpson. The first and second generation of websites was built on a technology called Cold Fusion.

The Challenge

Protogen was tasked by Red Balloon to solve issues regarding the speed of their existing website. This happened at a time when Red Balloon had just begun to implement digital advertising on the Sydney Morning Herald and Channel 9 websites (among other major media sites).

Red Balloon was dropping advertisements from their servers onto the SMH page, so when hundreds of thousands of SMH site visitors interacted with the advertisement banner the loading time required was generated from the Red Balloon server, which ultimately slowed down their server speed the point where it was barely usable. Protogen were tasked to approach the problem on a server and infrastructure level, diagnose the performance and also makes fixes. Protogen’s recommendations involved re-architecting the entire system, (which Red Balloon eventually implemented) along with immediate recommendations around how to improve the performance of Cold Fusion by better scaling the memory in order to not arrive at regular capacity limits.

The Solution

Protogen dropped in a package on Cold Fusion monitoring, using early stage Java monitoring tools.
